Standing on the precipice

Peru in fear

the official interim result is correct, then the Marxist candidate Pedro Castillo has a lead of a mere 0.34%.  Yesterday Vladimir Cerrón, head of his party and convicted of corruption was apparently acquitted by a judge.  Some of “Peru libre’s” – the name of the political group – new members of Congress have close connections to the terrorist group “The Shining Way (Sendero Luminoso)”.  In recent skirmishes between government troops and Sendero Luminoso 69,000 people were killed.

Many votes have been challenged for irregularities and no one knows if the Official Election Commission (JNE) will do anything about it.  At the moment everything is possible, even a military coup. Should “Peru libre” take over power on 28th July, Peru’s Independence Day, the country needs to be prepared for drastic changes.  Freedom of press and religion, property rights, democratic institutions and free elections are at stake.  According to Peru libre’s electoral programme Peru should learn from Venezuela and Cuba.  Hardly anyone who voted for Castillo is aware of the contents of the party’s policy document.  According to the communists private property is the reason for the widespread corruption.  Furthermore, Chapter 21 states that the populus must be freed from the scourge of religion.

The corrupt dealings of the past five successive presidents have undermined any trust the Peruvian people had in the current politicians.  The pandemic that has driven hundreds of thousands into misery adds to the people’s despair. Now millions are sitting glued to their TVs or laptops waiting for hopeful bits of news.  But none such come.

Irrespective, however, of what happens Diospi Suyana will do everything in its power to continue to be a blessing for the many people in need who queue daily in front of the hospital’s entrance.  May God prevent us all from falling into the depths. /KDJ
