The quality of the line is amazingly good. I’m sitting in my office in Curahuasi and my counterpart is somewhere in eastern Congo. I met Dr. D. in Asunción 12 years ago. A committed Christian, he had founded an eye hospital there. He has been living in the heart of Africa for three years and works as an ophthalmologist under incredibly harsh conditions. “Klaus, we have no electricity and no clean water here,” he reports, “but I can still perform over 1,000 operations a year!”
But his next sentence hits me right in the heart: “I’m the only ophthalmologist here for 12 million people!” /KDJ
