A real taboo topic

With far-reaching consequences

It is highly probable that where sex is a taboo topic people are frequently sexually abused.  Where loneliness rules the probability is even higher and where force and aggression are the norm, sexual abuse is frequent.  Our school pupils, just like children all over the world, are exposed to these risks.  That is why prevention of sexual abuse is a core subject in our school’s syllabus.

But not only children should know how to protect themselves.  Parents also need orientation and clear strategies just in case.  That is why we organised a parents evening on this topic – see above photo.  More than 30 people helped at the event.  Sketches were put on and the parents were asked to determine as to whether the situations portrayed could be classified as sexual abuse or as dangerous situations.  Bearing in mind what they had seen they formed discussion groups and developed ideas as to how to protect their offspring.  They were also given concrete suggestions what to do should their child be affected.  The most important preventative measure in order to protect one’s child, however, is a relationship built on love and trust.

10% of our pupils and 12% of the parents present that evening have experienced some form of sexual abuse.  The dark figure, however, is probably clearly higher.  Our colegio’s “Working group for the wellbeing of our pupils” offers mentoring and practical support for those traumatised in this way.  We work closely together with Curahuasi’s Psychological Centre to which we also send on parents and children.  Mentoring sexually abused children requires especially God’s help, as in the end, only He can heal the souls of the wounded children.  We thank you for your prayers. /DC
