Homework in the open doorway

A peek into the private life of a school girl

Giselle is sitting with her mother in the light coming through the open door.  The house has no windows and bright daylight helps no end when she is doing her homework.  To date, due to Corona, Giselle has not yet met her fellow classmates from Grade 1.  Her teachers communicate with her via tablet.  Not always that easy, but lessons continue.  A sponsor in Germany is thankfully paying for her school fees.

Since December 2019 no lessons have taken place in any of Peru’s school’s classrooms.  Due to the pandemic the children have had to stay at home.  The TV-replacement programme is lacking left, right and centre.  Put frankly, most Peruvian school children have missed two complete years of school education.  But nevertheless, they still move up to the next class.

Every day the Colegio Diospi Suyana provides an extensive zoom-programme for its pupils.  Furthermore, every week the new learning materials are distributed and those from last week are collected for correction.  Of course the 417 pupils at the Diospi-Suyana-School are going through hard times, but they continue to learn at a very good level.  They will not call the years 2020 and 2021 “lost” or “wasted”.  A “dankeschön” to all staff around head of school Christian Bigalke who have put in loads of time and effort in order to keep this exemplary system up and running.
