David* is a four-year-old little boy. His parents brought him to hospital because of his constant fever. The x-ray confirmed the diagnosis given after his bodily examination. A case of an infection of the left lung. But having been given antibiotics his condition did not really improve. In the ultrasound examination paediatrician Dr Simon Then found a large pleural infusion (see above picture). Performing a minor surgical intervention surgeon Dr Olga Koop and Dr Then were able to extract 150ml of fluid. The success was impressive. Two days later David had no more fever and could return home shortly afterwards. An analysis of the puncture pointed to Tuberculosis.
Thus the correct diagnosis would be: bacterial superinfection with a high suspicion of TBC. State health institutions treat Tuberculosis with combined medications free of charge.
The problem is that many patients stop taking the medication as soon as the acute complaints subside. Roughly 30,000 people living in Peru suffer from TB. Houses made from adobe that have bad extractor hoods and no heating, poverty and malnutrition favour catching Tuberculosis.
