For Santurnino there is a “before Diospi Suyana” and an “after Diospi Suyana”
Christian Haupt received a photo in his cell phone from somewhere. “Can you help me?” And suddenly the head of our orthopaedic workshop dives into the bleak world of a Kakau farmer who lives 1,323 kilometers away in the Peruvian rainforest.
Two years earlier, the 56-year-old had injured his right foot so badly with a brush cutter that it had to be amputated.
No one was able or willing to offer him any further help. What followed were many months without prospects and without orthopaedic care. But luckily a friend from his village was treated at the Diospi Suyana Hospital. He returned with a happy message: “You have to go there one day. Maybe they can help you!”

The journey to Curahuasi took five days. Christian Haupt offered to help. “I need about two weeks to tailor a prosthesis for them!” – Santurnino’s response: “Then I’ll stay in Curahuasi and wait!” The prosthesis fits like a glove.
And of course the farmer can now work on his plantation again and earn a living.
For thousands and thousands of patients there has been a before and an after in recent years. And the decisive turning point happened at the Diospi Suyana hospital.
