Why we keep the prices for the patients so low?

A doctor’s appointment costs 1 Pound

Many poor patients queue in front of the cashier’s office in order to pay their 4 Soles (less than one GBP) to be able to speak with a doctor.

Since 2007 we have kept this amount the same.  Why?

Penurious patients could never ever pay the true costs of a medical treatment.  But they are prepared to wait patiently in front of the hospital.  For rich patients, however, this waiting, that can last several hours, is an unreasonable demand.  Thus they do prefer to go to the local upper-class clinic.

History gives enough examples that over the course of time missionary hospitals have turned from hospitals for the poor into luxurious clinics that cater for the well-off.  It requires discipline from the hospital’s administration and a steady flow of donations to keep the prices affordable for those seeking help.  At Diospi Suyana we have been able to achieve this goal for the past 14 years; glancing into the waiting room we see immediately that it is filled with the poor and not the rich.

We adhere to our motto: the most modern medicine for the poor!

The queue in front of the cashier’s desk overflows into the far side of the waiting room.
