“Dear patients, where do you come from?

A spontaneous survey in the waiting room

Tuesday morning: outside, the MRI scanner is moved into the MRI room with the utmost care. I use 15 minutes to show a Siemens-Peru employee around the hospital. The waiting room is full and one look is enough to see that these are poor people.

“May I ask which of you are from the state of Apurimac?” I ask the large group. Hands go up everywhere. “And do we have any patients from Cusco today?” At the moment, a similar picture emerges. My analysis of our patient population is almost complete. – Yesterday, our patients arrived from the states of Apurimac, Cusco, Puno, Madre de Dios, Ayacucho, Lima and Arequipa. This means that people seeking help from 7 of Peru’s 24 departments were sitting on our chairs waiting for their medical consultations.

Katherine Hinostroza from Siemens is visibly gripped. She has never seen anything like it in any hospital in the mountains of Peru. It is obvious that the donated MRI will benefit exactly the right target group – the poorest of the poor. (Picture above: The waiting room seen through the filter of a Peruvian folklore rug)
