To Diospi Suyana
It was December 1, 2005 in Fraureuth near Zwickau. After a lecture in the evening, I was sitting at the Baumgarten family’s kitchen table at around 9:30 pm. One of the daughters had arranged the presentation. Although only 18 years old, Bettina was toying with the idea of working as an X-ray assistant at the Hospital Diospi Suyana. Bettina Baumgarten really did come to Peru and found the love of her life at language school. That was all quite a long time ago.
Her parents Günter and Ruth celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on July 5. Surrounded by 4 children and 10 grandchildren. They did without presents. Instead they supported Diospi Suyana with a proud donation.
When I get Ruth on the phone it is a nice conversation across the ocean. “I’m on the Diospi Suyana website almost every day,” she assures me. And of course Ruth still remembers that dinner in the kitchen of her house. Two decades ago. Afterwards I drove off into the darkness of the night towards my next destination.
Humanitarian projects are a dime a dozen. But Diospi Suyana leaves deep impressions. It is the blessing of God and his miracles that remain unforgettable for all of us. /KDJ
