After 15 years, Dr. Haßfeld can give a competent opinion
“Oh, you were in South America and visited Machu Picchu. What are your impressions of Peru?” – “Yes, we also spent a week in the south of the country when we were passing through. I can tell you exactly what it’s like there!” Dialogs like this take place somewhere every day. A tourist takes the liberty of sharing his experiences. “In Peru it’s like this and people talk like this and society is like this….!” Of course, in reality he has hardly any idea of the diversity of the country, its history and social interaction. He remembers the hotel bar and the street in front of the main entrance. The tour guide made interesting comments and it was cold or hot outside, depending on the time of year.
Things are completely different for the Haßfeld family. The gynecologist and his wife Damaris spent a decade and a half as nurses at the Hospital Diospi Suyana. And their four children grew up in the mountain village of Curahuasi. In September they returned to the missionary hospital for a short assignment. This week they spoke to journalist Jutta Pöschko-Kopp from the Schorndorfer Zeitung. A good newspaper article from the perspective of two people who know Peru and Diospi Suyana better than 99.99% of Europeans and Americans.
