A weekend in the great outdoors
The Salkantay is a natural spectacle of a special kind. 6264 m high, it greets tourists on the left-hand side of the plane as they approach the city of Cusco. The first ascent was made by a group of Frenchmen in 1952. With its many scree and ice avalanches, the Salkantay lives up to its name as a “wild mountain”.
And it was precisely in this unique mountain world that 20 male Diospi Suyana employees spent three days recharging their batteries. The weather was completely mixed with snow, sleet showers and sunshine. Three mountain hikes were on the program. The bearable pace on the way made many personal conversations possible. School principal Matthias Rehder and surgeon Dr. Thomas Tielmann held devotions in the morning and evening, which were thought-provoking. The question was: “How can we hear God’s voice?”
When the group arrived safely in Curahuasi on Sunday evening, everyone was happy: the women, the children and the participants themselves. In a few hours the daily routine in Diospi Suyana’s various fields of work will begin again. The memories of a strong community experience in the heart of the Andes will remain. And of course the tired hikers will follow the call of the summits once more in 2025.
