Get out of the vicious cycle

Marco Acuna travels for Diospi Suyana throughout southern Peru to visit former patients.  His reports tell of the great human suffering often seen in the mountain villages, but they also bear witness to dramatic positive changes in peoples lives.

The patient with the purple hat is called Sabina Huaman.  She was one of nine children.  Like her parents, she succumbed at an early age to the addiction of alcohol.  Constant quarrels with her partner were the result.  Sabine went from bad to worse.  She lost 30 kg. She knocked on many doors, but no one could help her. Finally she came with her family to Diospi Suyana.  The Quechua Indian woman sat with wide eyes in the morning service at the hospital.  The songs touched her battered heart like good medicine.  Then in the waiting room she saw the film about the life of Jesus.

Now, Sabina and her husband are free from alcohol.  They have demonstrated with their marriage they are now on a solid foundation.  When she speaks of her faith, enthusiasm is unmistakable.  How can this radical renewal of people be explained?  While staying at the mission hospital, she gave her life to the man on the cross.

Pastor Marco Acuna understands what it is like for people like Sabina.  Six years ago he himself was a drug addict and was on the highway to the cemetery.  But then someone pressed a Bible in his hand.  Finally, after reading the last page of the book, the cocaine had lost its power over Marco.  He had become free.
