A Midterm Assessment by Nurse Margarita Wiens

Impressive results

That used to be a big wound. Thanks to Sister Margarita, it’s almost healed.

Washington Mamani is a Quechua from Puno. He is lying on the stretcher and is glad that Nurse Margarita Wiens is treating his foot wound. In southern Peru, there is probably no other expert who knows more about wounds than she does.

From June 2025 through the first week of August this year, she has treated 604 patients with wounds of all types and sizes. It takes a great deal of experience, patience, and attention to detail to heal, for example, a diabetic’s leg ulcers.

Nurse Margarita runs the wound care clinic every Thursday, and its success has steadily increased her popularity. During Independence Day celebrations in Curahuasi’s central square, she was even hugged by some of her patients recently—out of gratitude.

The nurse from Lemgo, Germany, works at Diospi Suyana Hospital as an expression of her faith. She doesn’t really need to talk much about her faith. Her conscientious and loving work speaks louder than a long Sunday morning sermon. /KDJ
