When there’s a crash, there’s a real crash. And when the sirens sound at night, many employees have to jump out of bed. Doctors and nurses, laboratory and X-ray staff, security personnel, surgical teams and, if necessary, staff from the intensive care unit. The five accident victims in the small car were not wearing seatbelts and the bottle of whisky in the Hilux pickup spoke volumes.
One patient had to be transferred to the neurosurgery department in Cusco. He arrived alive in the Inca metropolis. Dr. Fritz Meiswinkel and Dr. Huibert de Vries helped a child with bilateral femur fractures. And Dr. Lukas Steffen looked after a woman with an extensive scalp laceration.
Once again, our new CT scanner was a real blessing in terms of diagnostics. The staff at the Hospital Diospi Suyana is actually small, but all the more powerful for that. Although we only have three Swiss nationals in the team, it works like Swiss clockwork.
On the way home, we come across several motorcycles in the dark. Up to three people are sitting on the fast bikes. But I don’t see any helmets. It will be fine. And if not? Well, the emergency room at Diospi Suyana Hospital is there for such cases. /KDJ
