For three-quarters of Peruvians, it’s down to the wire

In recent months, Peruvian employees in the capital Lima earned an average of S/ 1,667.2 (~ 415 USD/€). In rural areas, revenues were even lower. With the current inflation, over 75% of families are reaching the end of their means. They try to make ends meet through loans. However, with the high interest rates common in Peru, they are visibly falling into a debt trap.

Hospital Diospi Suyana constantly operates in a field of tension between different interests. On the one hand, national employees are hoping for salary increases to offset the negative effects of inflation. On the other hand, indigent patients are lining up, especially now in need of charity for their treatment.
