One year of bleeding/hemorrhage – completely unnecessary

The patient in the photo seems exhausted, but she and her husband are thankful for the treatment in the hospital Diospi Suyana. For one year the 38-year-old continuously was bleeding from her uterus. The complaints were worsened when doctors from the state of Puno executed a uterine abrasion. Searching for help, the couple finally travelled to the mission’s hospital.

On Tuesday, Dr Jens Haßfeld examined the uterus in the operating room. To everyone’s astonishment he discovered two hands full of leftover placenta tissue! Obviously the state doctors overlooked this part of the placenta 6 months earlier. Only by vigorously curetting was the tissue were removed from the uteris wall.  An ultrasound conducted during the procedure then showed an empty uterus.  At last the reason for her suffering was treated appropriately.

In the photo, the patient Machyeni Soncco is lying in bed. Her husband (left) provides for his family as a carpenter. The medical assistant Erica Usca is standing next to Dr Haßfeld. Our gynecologist writes: “My colleague is an experienced doctor who is about to finish her residency. Neither her nor I have ever experienced a case like this so far!“ (NB All the people in this photo have agreed to its’ publication)
