The Last Chance in 35 Miles

 Slider Last chance

Somewhere in Colorado

I have long since passed the street sign before I realize what I have just read.  I turn around to take a photo.  It is 35 miles to the town “Last Chance” (last chance?).  What were the founders thinking when they named this place?  Was it the last opportunity to by some decent cows or land?  Or were the city fathers offering some kind of life coaching and this was the last chance to organize your life and come to terms with past mistakes.  Maybe they were thinking even about a religious meaning?  Another 35 miles until the driver has time to bring his relationship to God in order, because at mile 36 he may have a heart attack or fatal car crash..

Haus in Last Chance
A house in the town of “Last Chance.” Time has obviously expired for this building.

One thing is certain our life is full of last chances. When my grandmother died, my mother cried and complained, “If only I had visited her more often.”  And when my father died I also thought, “I wish I had spent more time with him.”  Of all the questions we might ask, thinking about God is the most important. After all, Jesus has given us eternal life, promising a life after death, and an abundant life before death.  If today were my last day, what would I do differently?

Last Chance is 35 miles away, so it is still a half hour drive.  This time will pass quickly as I think about so much at stake.
