The Kids’ Clubs—Feedback After Ten Years

Richard Sanchez recalls

There are certainly around 300 motorcycle taxis in Curahuasi by now, and the number is growing every month. On the way to the hospital, my driver turns around. “How is Doctora Martina doing, by the way?” — My wife is healthy and doing well. Why do you ask? — “I used to go to one of her children’s clubs. We met every week in the amphitheater!”

“How long ago was that?” I want to know exactly now. “Oh, it’s been at least ten years!”

“And do you still have any fond memories?”

“Well, of course, the kids’ clubs have really helped me in life!”

We arrive, and Richard Sanchez opens the door for me. I take a quick photo and pay 3 soles (75 cents).

According to estimates, around 10,000 different children in the Curahuasi district have attended the Diospi-Suyana children’s clubs. In November 2005, my wife Tina, together with Lyndal Maxwell from Australia, started the first children’s group in our living room. No one will ever be able to fully appreciate just how great a blessing has come from the oldest branch of our mission’s work. Currently, about 300 children meet week after week in ten clubs.
