We extend our warmest congratulations to them
The game is over, but emotions are still running high. After a nail-biting penalty shootout, Paraguay defeated Germany. Dr. Oliver Schmidt, his wife Anna, and their children are Paraguayans with distant German roots. Right now, their living room is filled with a festive atmosphere. Our longtime staff members at Hospital Diospi Suyana sent us their victory photo via WhatsApp. And we can understand their joy. A country with about 7 million people showed the four-time world champions how it’s done.
Life goes on as early as the next day. The millionaires on the field will get over their defeat. For some TV stations in Germany, advertising revenue will drop. The hype has died down prematurely, but all of our economic and social problems remain.
In the evening, my wife and I watch a movie about the brutal persecution of Christians in Nigeria. Thousands are shot, burned, and beheaded because they profess their faith in the risen Jesus Christ. Fanatical Boko Haram terrorists are rampaging across the country, killing in the name of Allah. Hatred reigns, and Christians are trying to forgive their enemies. That’s not so easy.
We are deeply moved by the plight of those families. The Paraguay vs. Germany game suddenly seems like old news. /KDJ
