In the sports hall of the Diospi Suyana School, our pupils discovered a very rare guest. According to our educational director, it is a juvenile Andean sparrowhawk. Jonathan Rosenkranz recently photographed a close relative of the little bird in his garden.
The Andean pygmy owl reaches a body size of around 15 to 16 centimetres. The plumage is either dark brown or reddish orange-brown. The Andean pygmy owl’s range extends from the Andes of Venezuela, northern Colombia and central and eastern Ecuador to northern Peru. It is a resident bird that inhabits semi-open mountain and cloud forests. Its altitudinal distribution ranges from 2,000 meters to 3,500 meters above sea level. (Wikipdedia)
