Peruvian President survives impeachment trial

After a twelve-hour marathon debate in Congress

Public opinion was set dead against the President and all the bookies’ odds followed suit. Of the 130 Congress-Representatives only 18 were members of Kuczynski’s party.

But since parliamentarians of all six opposition parties abstained or did not even appear in Congress, the proponents for the President’s impeachment did not reach the necessary two-thirds majority.

On 13th December the Brazilian building-giant Odebrecht made public that it had a business relationship with one of Pedro Pablo Kuczynski‘s companies. Even though the contract was made ten years ago, the opposition tried to impeach the President in an expedited procedure.

As a missionary organisation Diospi Suyana takes a strictly political neutral stance. Our first contact with the country’s President was on the 19th June when Kuczynski invited missionary doctors John and Dr Haßfeld to a meeting in the presidential palace. Accompanied by several ministers Kuczynski attended the hospital’s tenth anniversary celebration event in Curahuasi and held the ceremonial address.
