Latin America: Fuel prices highest in Peru

Inflation hits hard

As is so often the case, the lower strata of society suffer the most in times of economic crisis. A recent comparison of gasoline costs in Latin American countries was unflattering for Peru. 6.3 USD is what a motorist must pay per gallon (3.785 L). Bus companies, transportation companies and cab corporations pass on the increased prices to their passengers. Everyone in Peru now knows that the years ahead will be tough. In recent weeks, popular concern about the impact of inflation has erupted in wildcat strikes and road closures in the countryside. There is plenty of social fuel. Anyone who ignites now could quickly start a wildfire.
