Why we are missionaries
As I walk home after 7 pm that Monday night, I turn around to see the hospital behind me. Above the first floor a light is on. Even without glasses, I can recognize this head in the window from almost a mile away. It’s Dominik Hüttner who works as a software specialist in administration.
His overtime will not be paid because, as a missionary, he receives no salary from the hospital anyway. The financial support of his friends in Germany enables him to be here, however, the amount he receives is probably significantly less than what he would earn in Germany. What motivates our 50 missionaries to collaborate like this on a voluntary basis?
A few days ago I wrote to the professor of a university here in Peru. Together with his students, he wanted to visit our hospital. He was interested in this question, too, and wanted to find out why Diospi Suyana had grown to such a strong organization. The head in the window is one of the reasons.
It is the passion and dedication of the staff that fill the rooms of the hospital with life. The personal conviction that there is more to life than bank accounts stands and falls with our faith in God.
Several times other institutions of Peru have mentioned they would have built Diospi Suyana somewhere else. I quickly dismiss these suggestions, for no amount of money can put the faith, the devotion, and the self-sacrifice in a building. This comes from devoted people whom God has transformed to carry out His work.
