Church resignations in Europe – but faith is growing from a global perspective

Hand on heart: there is no alternative to faith

Last year, 1.2 million people in Germany alone turned their backs on the mainstream churches. When will the last one quietly turn out the light and lock the door? Fortunately, this impression has nothing to do with the global trend.

In his book “Mere Christianity”, Cambridge professor C.S. Lewis wrote in 1952: “The outside observer thinks that we Christians are dying of old age. But that has often been thought. Time and again it has been said that Christianity is dying, for example, through persecution from without and corruption from within, through the rise of Islam or the increasing importance of the natural sciences, through the strengthening of anti-Christian revolutionary movements. But each time the world was disappointed in the end. The first disappointment happened right after the crucifixion. The man came back to life…now they are trying to kill what He (Jesus) started. But every time they go back to shoveling dirt on His grave, they suddenly hear that He is still alive and visible in many other places. It’s no wonder they hate us for it!”

As part of the preparations for the “Luz en los Andes” festival, 100 volunteers from Peru and Mexico took part in a Zoom conference on Tuesday evening. A Christian youth conference in the heart of the Andes is striking proof that a young generation needs and longs for faith in the God of the Bible. After all, it is not worth serving a life if there is no direction, no meaning, no forgiveness, no divine love and no hope of eternal life. /KDJ
