615,000 patient visits – Don Jorge is one of them

Not an easy life

His stomach looks like a baby’s sore bottom. The large areas of inflammation hurt and can cause acute bleeding at any time. Yesterday’s colonoscopy also revealed remnants of old blood.

Don Jorge is 76 years old and lives in the state of Ayacucho. “I traveled over 24 hours in cars and buses to get to Curahuasi!” The farmer tells me about his home. He has not yet retired. He works in his fields and mainly grows potatoes and quinoa. He has raised five children and seven people currently live in his mud house.

Diospi Suyana Hospital has been in existence for over 18 years. And Quechuas and campesinos (mountain farmers) still make up the vast majority of our patient population. The difference between these two groups is blurred. Many indigenous people claim with conviction that they are actually mestizos (half-breeds). The reason is simple. Mestizos receive significantly more social recognition than the descendants of the Incas. Jorge can be helped with medication and this will encourage his neighbors and relatives to make the long journey to the missionary hospital. /KDJ
