The final result will not be known until mid-May
It is now seven days since the first round of voting for the future president. 93.481% of the votes had been counted by yesterday evening. The Supreme Electoral Court (JNE) has announced that it will be a good four weeks before the final result is available. As over a million of the votes are disputed, expert committees have to decide on the validity of entire voting packages on a case-by-case basis. But for Diospi Suyana this delay is exactly what we need. If there were a result before or during the youth festival – and the right-wing Lopez Aliaga could oust the communist Roberto Sanchez from second place – the consequences would be incalculable.
The most likely scenario would be a general strike in southern Peru with closed roads and serious unrest. Fortunately, nobody needs to get too upset yet. Everything is likely to remain up in the air for another four weeks. We are hoping for nice days in Curahuasi at the end of April and we are praying for God’s blessing for the youth festival. Only then will we take a deep breath and eagerly await the outcome of the election. /KDJ
