The fight for survival on the streets of Lima

Have they done their homework?

“Fasten your seatbelts, please, we are coming into land!” The pilot’s words are encouraging especially after a 12.5 hour flight. 15 minutes later I am sitting in a taxi. Our Guest House is located in the south of the capital; at this hour of the day the journey there takes a good hour.

Somewhere in Lima at a red traffic light. An old woman knocks on our left front window begging. On the right we see a man limping through the stationary cars looking for buyers of his wares. But two boys offering a mobile car-wash grab my attention. Having sprayed the car with water from a can, they start cleaning and scrubbing, one at the back, the other at the front of the car.

Two minutes later they have finished and argue about the fair division of the spoils.

The lights turn green and the scenery around the car changes as my driver accelerates.

I hope that the two boys will turn up to school on time tomorrow, since it is way past their bedtime and I muse as to whether they have done their homework?/KDJ
