For the past year Diospi Suyana has been trying to convince the Regional Government that paving the entrance road to the hospital is a high priority. There is a saying is Peru, “He who doesn´t stay constantly on the case of the authorities is quickly forgotten”. With this in mind, Dr John has been making weekly trips over of the mountains to the government offices in Abancay to negotiate with the officials.
The journey takes a total of 4 hours including the time used in Apurimac´s capital city. Obviously these trips are somewhat labourious in nature, but fortunately the views of the glaciers over Andean mountains helps relieve the strain.
On Monday evening a Quechua boy arrived in the hospital with a fractured arm. He too had been crossing the Andes mountains, but by horseback. A fall from the horse caused the broken arm. The x-ray demonstrated that the bones were in good aligned, so a plaster cast for several weeks should see him in good shape before too long.
