Mirror, mirror on the wall…

On my way to lecture theatre 3 of Jena’s University

Friday, 12th October. At 6p.m. I park my car and walk to lecture theatre 3. A certain Dr Schmidt has organised the talk and has done the necessary advertising. On my way there I pass a monument. Students, sitting on the steps below, are tipping languidly on their mobiles, beer is at hand to quench their thirst and loud music floods the square.

On the left hand side on the building’s wall my eye catches sight of a woman looking into the mirror wanting to know her fortune. She is waiting for death and then everything is over. I get the sense that the young people sitting on the steps share her view: life is without meaning and without hope.

At 7p.m. sharp standing in front of an interested audience I start my talk. Some are Christians, some are not. 70 pairs of eyes follow the swift change of pictures. Diospi Suyana, an organisation that counts on God’s reality both in this and in the future life. I ask myself what my audience is thinking as I tell them the story of Diospi Suyana.

At 8:45p.m. I load up my car again. Night has fallen. The boys and girls are still sitting there. During my talk inside they have drunk several beer cans and the music’s volume has not changed much. It depends on one’s perspective. Does death have the last word or does the eternal life exist of which Jesus Christ spoke? /KDJ

Inside: hope; outside: lack of perspective.
