Deep in the South
A cotton field in South Carolina reminds me of the slavery that was present in the south 200 years ago. On December 20, 1860, South Carolina was the first state to leave the Union. Other slave-owning states soon followed. Abraham Lincoln led the young nation successfully through the Civil War. With the victory, he saved not only the survival of the United States, but also prompted the release of the slaves. It is undisputed that the book Uncle Tom’s Cabin had a huge impact in the way people viewed slavery.
In England and the USA, Christians were on the forefront of the abolitionist movement. Harriet Beecher Stowe, the author of the novel, was the daughter of a theologian. Even President Abraham Lincoln was a staunch Christian who made no secret of his belief. His parents Thomas and Nancy Lincoln, as devout Baptists, rejected the idea of slavery. Interestingly, Barack Obama took the oath of office in 2009 and 2013 on Lincoln’s Bible.
