In 1993 Mario Vargas Llosa published his famous novel "Death in the Andes". The title of the book is located for innumerable tragedies and fates, in the entire and region.
At 9am on Friday I was returning to Curahuasi from Lima. Forty-five minutes from home I look over and notice a paddock containing 50 tent structures. The people living in these tents are afraid of losing their homes in a massive landslides.
The story is similiar in all parts of this region. Somewhere between Curahuasi and Abancay there is a mass grave containing 100 people who perished when 20 years ago a large piece of the mountainside broke off and burying whole families in their homes.
