Chris Welch and Team: Maintenance of Our Transmitter Stations

With a spectacular photo from Puerto Maldonado

You can only get through a marathon with an iron will. Our expedition team, led by Australian Chris Welch, is currently traveling through the south, getting the Diospi Suyana transmission facilities up and running. Our friends have to cover enormous distances and work late into the night. We hope they’ll arrive back in Curahuasi safely this Sunday evening. We nominate Chris Welch, his son Salomon, Doris Manco, David Huanco, and Vladimiro Peña for the Peruvian Order of Merit. They truly deserve this honor.

If you travel off the beaten path in Peru, you can capture some truly amazing photos. In the photo above, five people are sitting on a motorcycle. Yes, there are indeed five of them. In the back, the mother is nursing her youngest child.

A parabolic antenna is being realigned.
Endless hours in the pickup truck—from one radio tower to the next
The tower in the foreground is also part of the Diospi Suyana network.
A different location and different weather. There’s plenty to do here, too.
Working in the dark. The mood is still good.

The big screen. Our friends didn’t have to miss a single World Cup game either.
In the lowlands, where temperatures are high. In the background, you can see a suspension bridge spanning a jungle river.

There are traffic jams in Peru, too—and what traffic jams they are.
