Dr. Fritz Meiswinkel spent 9 days at the Diospi Suyana Hospital
. Once again, the Andes drew traumatologist Dr. Meiswinkel there during his vacation. No wonder—he and his wife Solveig worked at Diospi Suyana for three years. They have long since returned to live in Baden-Württemberg, yet they find that Curahuasi holds a particularly strong appeal for them.
Dr. Meiswinkel writes: “Now we’re off again! It was another wonderful and busy trip. Patient Teofilo is from the province of Espinar in the department of Cusco. On Sunday evening, he was playing soccer with friends and suffered a fracture of his right lower leg. That night, his family drove him past the city of Cusco (quite a statement) all the way to the Diospi Suyana Mission Hospital.”
Early Monday morning, he arrived at our facility with a potential compartment syndrome. (Explanation: The injury causes the tissue inside the fascia to swell. This impairs blood flow, which in turn can lead to the leg becoming necrotic.)
While the staff were thoroughly enjoying their company outing on Monday afternoon, he and anesthesiologist Dr. Natascha Lopata were in the operating room with their respective teams. He doesn’t mention whether our colleagues got a piece of the cake afterward.
The operation was a complete success. Actually—if we’re being completely honest—it would be great if the Meiswinkels would join the team again for three years. The more I think about this idea, the more I’m convinced it’s a good one. /KDJ
