An extremely rare occurrence: a young man says: “Thank you!”

But for what?

The generous donation from the high school student was unexpected. And the accompanying text on the transfer was quite unusual.

“I spent two years with you at the mission in Peru and would like to thank you again for this time with a donation. Keep up the good work…!”

On the second attempt I have Danilo on the phone.

DS: “Danilo, a big thank you, but what prompted you to make this generous donation?”

Danilo: “The months in Curahuasi were a cool time for me,” replies the 16-year-old, “I was able to get to know a whole new culture and learn Spanish really well. Of course, the most important thing for me is the many friends!”

DS: “Have these friendly contacts lasted?”

Danilo: “I’m in contact with everyone via WhatsApp. And sometimes we even have face-to-face meetings here in Germany. So I’m totally grateful!”

DS: “I like to hear that. Do you already know what career you want to pursue after graduation?”

Danilo: “I’m thinking of a social task. In any case, I want to help others!”

DS: “Well, I wish you the very best. And best wishes to your parents!”

It is not uncommon for people to be criticized when they decide to work for Diospi Suyana in Peru. With a raised index finger and furrowed brow, critical voices are speaking out: “You’re living out your dream, but your children will have to pay for it later!”

Danilo is one example of many that take the wind out of the sails of such statements. A transcultural experience cannot be compensated for with money. The young people also see that their parents don’t just talk piously, but actively live out their faith in God and their devotion to their neighbor. In the end, it’s actions and not words that count! The example set by parents is an extremely valuable starting capital for a meaningful life.

Danilo looks back with gratitude and made a donation. And what a one. /KDJ

Danilo was the first person I met in Diospi Suyana. He was working on a motor cart! Great guy, wonderful family! Christ’s blessings on you!!
