Three pictures in the 2024 annual calendar are by her
It’s actually terribly simple. Some take good photos and others don’t. Marielene Lächele undoubtedly belongs in the first category. For their wedding in 2015, Marielene and her husband Tobias wished for an Olympus camera. The OM D M10 II is a small, waterproof and sand-protected system camera. A few years later, Marielene received a fixed focal length (45mm 1:1.8) as a gift.

The honeymoon took the young couple to Peru and, of course, to Curahuasi. The two of them saw the Diospi Suyana Hospital and the school. “A great job,” thought the business teacher, “but I’d rather stay in Germany. I feel no calling to ever come here!”
Their credo was as firm as the Matterhorn. But on November 13, 2019, her life was turned upside down. Her husband and she sat at home and pondered. It was obvious that they were at a crossroads and the question was what to do next. At that moment, a missionary doctor called from Peru. He had no idea what awkward situation he was about to burst into.
When Tobias answered the call and it became clear who was answering completely unexpectedly, Marielene spontaneously exclaimed: “I’m going to be sick!” Who could blame a heavily pregnant woman if the extreme poverty of southern Peru did not awaken her wanderlust?
But less than 10 minutes later she said thoughtfully: “For the first time I can imagine working for Diospi Suyana!” That was 2019. The fact is that we don’t want to give Marielene or Tobias away again. In any case, we need the photographer on site as long as Diospi Suyana produces annual calendars – so let’s say for another 15 years.
For 2024, the Baden-Württemberg native contributed the photos for the months of February, May and December. If you like the pictures, you can order one or more copies of the annual calendar from Karin Straßheim.
