Sabine Teichert and friends are changing the world – even in their free time

A very special story

Sabine Teichert manages the nursing service at Diospi Suyana Hospital with incredible commitment. She would have every reason to sit down on her couch in the evening, exhausted, and put her feet up. On occasional walks, however, she had noticed the plight of the people in the upper neighborhoods of our small town. The children she had seen in the streets were particularly close to her heart. Should she help them somehow, perhaps with a leisure program? Sabine was unsure. Finally, in December 2022, it stood on one of Curahuasi’s local mountains. She prayed: “God, if it’s Your idea and not mine that I go there and take care of the children and women in Patapata, then send a Condor now!” Every tourist traveling through Peru has seen a condor – but usually only on a postcard. If you go to the Colca Canyon with a guide, you have a better chance. Condors have also been spotted in Curahuasi. I myself have lived in the area for over 20 years and remember as an eyewitness a clear encounter with the largest flying bird in the world in our district.

When Sabine Teichert stands on the mountain and entrusts herself to God in such an unusual way, the improbable happens. A rustle, a shadow and a condor in full beauty flies directly into Sabine’s field of vision.

Sabine rented a small 40 m2 house in Patapata. A backyard of another 100 m2 provided the ideal conditions for their plan. In September 2023, she gathered together a number of dedicated employees and invited the children in the district to a club that meets at her home on Friday afternoons. Up to 80 children and young people of all ages attend.

We sing, play, laugh and pray. The message is unmistakable. The great God becomes very small and knows each one of us. He offers us his friendship. No matter how difficult our circumstances may be, God in the person of Jesus Christ is always very close to us. He hears our most peculiar prayers and, if he so wishes, even lets condors fly to the right place at the right moment. /KDJ
