What happened here on 3. and July 4, 2018?
This week, the license for our FM frequency in the city of Puerto Maldonado was extended by ten years. After all, around a quarter of a million people live in the catchment area of our antenna. The picture above shows our 50-meter-high tower in the tropical rainforest in the evening.
We have been broadcasting our program around the clock in the state of Madre Dios since 1 July 2018. The two calls on the following days are unforgettable.
On July 3, a young man called us at 5:49 in the morning. He said: “I’m completely devastated. My wife has run off with another guy. Since I’m a guard by trade, I have a service pistol. A few minutes ago I wanted to shoot myself in the head. But there was a radio in the neighborhood. And I heard that with God there is always hope. That’s why I didn’t pull the trigger!”
A day later, an inmate called in from the city prison in Puerto Maldonado, probably the most unpleasant place in the entire state. “Thank you so much for your radio program,” he shouted into the loudspeaker of his cell phone, “it gives us so much courage here in prison!”
These two listener echoes make one thing clear: “The message of faith in Jesus Christ is the best thing a radio station can broadcast!” /KDJ
