Dr Thomas Tielmann removes a Karotis-Glomus-Tumour

“Excellent work, Mr Vascular Surgeon!”

The normal Karotis-Glomus is a 2-3mm small knot in the division of the carotid artery.  It acts as a chemoreceptor and is mostly stimulated by pH, pCO2 und pO2.  It has been discovered that people living at higher altitudes (e.g. in the Andes or Himalayas) have a larger knot than those of us living near sea-level.  Since in 10% of the cases a malignant degeneration is at hand, a surgical removal is of essence.

Over the past few months the patient noticed a growing, but painless, lump in the right side of her throat.  For decades she has been living over 3,500m above sea-level.

The angio-CT confirmed a Karotis-Glomus-Tumour, 4x3cms in size, which had already encircled 180° of the right carotid artery.

On Wednesday Dr Thomas Tielmann (above left) successfully removed the whole vascular tumour from the cervical vessels and the patient survived the operation well.  In three weeks we will know whether the tumour was benign or malign.

CT-scan of the throat: the tumour is in the yellow circle: 3x4cms in size.
A day after the operation the patient is sitting outside with Dr Thomas Tielmann.
