Medical student Maria Franciska Vazquez gains medical experience
The German student (pictured right) deals with the next patient before presenting her findings to Dr. Martina John. The woman is a Quechua Indian woman from Ayacucho. In addition to a general lack of energy, the symptoms include tiredness, a certain amount of weight gain and a slow heartbeat.
During her studies, Maria read through many books with case descriptions and diagnoses. But theory is one thing, practice is quite another. So she ventures a diagnosis and hits the bull’s eye with her assumption: the patient suffers from a pronounced underactive thyroid gland, known as hypothyroidism.
The necessary laboratory tests are left and confirm the clinical impression. Treatment can be initiated immediately. As a result, the patient will feel much better in just a few days. In any case, her long journey from the state of Ayacucho was more than worth it. /KDJ (Publication of the image with the patient’s permission)
