Mexican students pray before their exams
A video-clip causes an uproar. Via social media millions of people saw students at the University of Mexico holding hands and saying a prayer before an exam. For Europeans such behaviour cannot even start to be fathomed. In the Western World religion has been driven well into the private sphere.
In North- and South-America, in Africa and in many Asian countries it is commonplace to see bible verses on cars or written on large posters. Bibles have their firm places both on restaurant tables as well as on office desks and no one is in the least embarrassed.
My wife and I have been living in South America for almost 20 years now. Speaking openly about God, the church and one’s faith is done even in ministers’ offices. Within minutes your taxi driver in Lima will tell you about his/her faith and why prayer is important for him/her. They affirm that a positive change in one’s life is only possible through God’s Spirit.
Public opinion in Europa might sneer at such faith. But in doing so our post-modern society misses the most important thing. Where else can we find orientation, comfort and meaning for our lives, if we do not find them in faith in God?/KDJ
