Speeches, appeals and hymns are part of a ceremony that is celebrated at regular intervals at all Peruvian schools. However, the values and glamorous deeds conjured up rarely correspond to the general practice of life. Class representatives, student police officers and environmental officers have also been appointed at our school. A few days ago, a Mathematical Olympiad was held in Curahuasi for all schools. Diospi Suyana took the first places and thus also achieved the top position in the overall ranking. The boys and girls at our school have good reason to be proud of “their” school. But it’s not about promoting elites or elbowing your way through life. No, the adolescents learn that they should put their talents at the service of the community. Humility before God and gratitude count more than egotism and airs and graces.
