A thought from the Torre Tagle palace
At around 10 o’clock on Friday morning, we report to the portal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Lima. The “Palacio de Torre Tagle” is a jewel from the Peruvian colonial era. The building materials used were specially imported from Europe and many Central American countries. Dr. Benjamin Zeier and I are led into the “Javier Pérez de Cuéllar” room. The Peruvian held the office of Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1982 to 1991.
The diplomat was 100 years old and, in the opinion of many, he made a great contribution during his long life. On the right-hand side of the stately hall is a dignified glass display case. We count almost 50 medals that Pérez de Cuéllar received from various governments over the course of his active career. Peru can be truly proud of its impressive legacy.
While Benjamin and I look at the decorations and decorations, a thought occurs to me. The decisive thing in life is not our entries in long registers of orders, but the note in the “Book of Life”. Jesus said: “…but rejoice that your names are written in heaven!” Paul and John call this register the book of life. Our destiny depends on it. The most important verse in the New Testament expresses this clearly.
“For God so loved mankind that he gave his only Son for them. Everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16 according to Hope for All). And that is exactly what I want to do, believe in Him and trust Him, no matter which way the wind blows. Whether people praise or despise my faith doesn’t matter to me at all.
It takes a good hour for His Excellency Elmer Schialer to receive us. He doesn’t miss the opportunity to come down from the second floor and then accompany us upstairs to his office. The Foreign Minister is a gentleman through and through. I can learn a lot from him. /KDJ
