Our church community in Curahuasi
The church is obviously unfinished. Visitors can marvel at the natural surroundings through the open windows. Parrots often fly past and greet you with loud chattering. The temperature inside is the same as outside. It could be that the building really will be completed one day. But to be honest, I’m hardly interested in the aesthetics of the building structure. Instead, between 60 and 80 people gather here on a Sunday morning. Women, men and children from poor backgrounds gather to celebrate the closeness of God. It starts at 9:00 am. Not everyone arrives on time.
And when the sermon gets boring, I concentrate on the red flowers in the center window and let my thoughts wander. Admittedly, most churches in Europe have a nicer ambience, but they are often yawningly empty and there is little sign of faith. So I prefer to go into this nave with its unplastered walls. /KDJ
