That was 2021 – January to June

Highlights and nail-biters I

On 2nd January Germany’s largest Christian online-portal presented Diospi Suyana on the front of its homepage, entitled: “Diospi Suyana – lived out charity in stormy times”.  “Jesus.de” has 0.12mio users and is thus the most important Christian German-speaking online-community by far.  Like Diospi Suyana it is non-denominational.

Nothing for weak nerves.  Family Meiswinkel sat on packed suitcases, but the entry permit had not been given.

End of January the Peruvian borders were in theory closed for Europeans.  On 26th January traumatologist Dr Friedemann Meiswinkel, his wife Solveig and their three children stood nervously at an airline’s check-in-desk at Frankfurt Airport.  Latam was waiting for a green light from Brazil, which in turn was waiting for an okay from Lima.  At the last moment the Peruvian Ambassador intervened and sent a letter in three languages late that evening.  The doors opened and the Meiswinkels jumped into the aeroplane at the very last possible moment.

Don Exaltación survived six weeks being mechanically ventilated on Diospi-Suyana’s-intensive-care-unit.

On 19th February intensive care physician Dr Claudia Ramirez and intensive carer Markus Rottler took the cannula out of his trachea.  After six weeks on a ventilator Don Exaltación had overcome his covid-infection.  ¾ of the 117 severe corona-cases at the missionary hospital survived.  These results are comparable to statistics from Europe and the US.

15 brand-new monitors well wrapped up.

Philipp Blank heads SMS medipool AG’s location in Wiesbaden.  He shares Diospi Suyana’s conviction that the best medical care should be available to the poor of this world.  On 2nd March Dr John festively presented 15 new monitors for the stationary and mobile departments of the Hospital Diospi Suyana.  The contents of the boxes have a five-figure value.

16 fortunate winners seen on World Women’s Day.

To mark World Women’s Day on 8th March our Media Centre raffled 16 hampers filled with food and consumer goods.  The photos show thankful women.  Radio Diospi Suyana is a fount of good ideas; an ingenious event.

An amazing happening in Diospi Suyana’s annals.  The Peruvian Head of State Francisco Sagasti is led through Diospi Suyana’s facilities by missionary doctors John.

Certain things one simply cannot imagine.  On 17th March Dr John called a member of the Morado Party and asked, if it were possible to make contact to the Peruvian President Francisco Sagasti (Morado has 10,000 members).  Exactly one week later, namely on 24th March, the Head of State landed on the hospital’s compound accompanied by the Health Minister and the Minister of Education, staying for a good hour.

For Toni and Sylvia Bürki faith is more important than money

(S)He who has spent her/his whole life working hard like Toni Bürki is absolutely entitled to fulfil one or more of her/his life’s dreams.  The Swiss-man had fallen in love with Chevrolet’s sports car Corvette Stingray.  But then on Bible-TV he saw an interview with Dr John.  Shortly afterwards he bought the book “Walking on the Water” (Brunnen Publishing House).  The contents of which sent shivers down his spine.  End of April he did not transfer the funds to the car dealer, but to a missionary hospital in Peru to be used for the treatment of our Covid-patients.  How is something like that possible?  Almost 51 years ago Toni had taken the decision to put God first in his life.  By the end of 2021 Diospi Suyana had used up the amount treating Covid-patients.

An evening end of May: a 13-year-old Quechua-girl is wheeled into the operating theatre.

From our website 10th May 2021.  Weekend in the evening.  From the end of a long corridor I zoom into the following scene.  A 13-year-old girl is pushed over the lock into the operating theatre wing.  Her mother was not able to accompany her, since at the entrance she tested positive for Corona.  The surgical intervention finds two diagnoses: a sceptic appendix and a bloody ovarian cyst.

The Quechua-family had travelled from Andahuaylas – a 5-hour journey.  In the city of Andahuaylas as well as in Abancay, the regional capital, there are hospitals.  Why did the family not look for help there?  The three Quechuas voted with their feet or, put more precisely, with their car tyres and preferred to knock on the door of the Hospital Diospi Suyana.

Since December 2019, i.e. since 1.5 years the girl has not set foot in a school.  She is a victim of the pandemic.  Since she has neither a mobile nor a tablet, so school via zoom was no option.  If her school had been able to provide online teaching…

The modification of an Emergency Bill that Diospi Suyana had sought for from the Government.
The modification of an Emergency Bill that Diospi Suyana had sought for from the Government.

On 27th May the Government published a modification of the Emergency Bill R.M.N°149-2021 that allows foreign missionary doctors to work during the pandemic without having to go through bureaucratic procedures.  Diospi Suyana had worked hard for this amendment over the past 18 months.  The President’s visit to the hospital and the active support of many TV-stations helped us achieve this positive result.

A midnight prayer group in a radio studio of Diospi Suyana.

On 4th June, two days before the second round of the Presidential Election, Diospi Suyana’s Media Centre organised a prayer night that was broadcast via 17 radio frequencies.  Prayers, songs and interviews encouraged the listeners to trust in God especially in hard times.  At midnight several Diospi Suyana Staff prayed live for the two candidates.

On 19th June several people interested in Diospi Suyana met at Wiesbaden’s Christuskirche.

Some of the 60 participants had travelled five hours and more to attend the event at Wiesbaden’s Christuskirche, all of which showed great interest in working at Diospi Suyana.  The mission of Diospi Suyana lives by its volunteers.  Up until the end of 2021 more than 200 missionaries from 11 countries have invested several years of their lives working in Curahuasi in an honorary capacity.

End of June a kind of press-conference took place in Brand’s Bakery in Kirchheimbolanden. Christine Fleck (left) reached an amazing record.

On 28th June head-baker Klaus Brand (centre) heard what really goes on in his bakery after working hours.  Journalist Torben Müller (right) from the Rheinpfalz keenly takes notes as Dr John speaks about Diospi Suyana and the historic contribution of Family Fleck.  Since 2008 Christine Fleck has baked basketfuls of muesli and with the sale of 25,000 bags of granola has donated more than €100,000 to Diospi Suyana.  Husband Dr Horst Fleck (red shirt) turned out to be the helper’s helper since he sponsored the ingredients (the value of which is €40,000).  Kirchheimbolanden‘s mayor Dr Marc Muchow (third from the left) was seriously impressed.  The experienced politician had probably never come across anything like this before.
