Susan Kirchhoff and the one-eyed crowd

A winning smile on Sunday morning

Nurse Susan, holding the Quechua-Indian’s hand tightly, laughs into the camera.  She is accompanying three patients and two relatives to the Eye Clinic.  In a few minutes the eye patches will be removed and the eyesight of the patients, who have undergone a cataract operation, will be tested.  Often this moment is a really awe-inspiring experience for the patients.  Beforehand they were half-blind through cataract; now when they can suddenly see e.g. flowers they literally explode with thankfulness.

For almost one year now ophthalmologist Dr Ursula Buck and Susan Kirchhoff have been working together as a team.  Both are not paid by Diospi Suyana, but get their salary from a private support network of donors.  Whoever does that must be driven by a special motive.

For Susan it was the talks about the faith that she had with her granny in her childhood.  She helped her granddaughter to take the first steps in trusting God.  Her grandmother has gone to be with Lord, but the seed she sowed germinated and brought forth fruit.  As regards her life as a Christian, Susan wants to be a hands-on Christian: that is why she came to Peru.  Today’s news gives a brilliant opportunity for us to thank Susan, who hails from Schwäbisch Gmünd in Baden-Württemberg. /KDJ
