Two injured
The horse race in the fields outside Curahuasi was a mixture of fun, dare and booze. In any case, the informal race attracted an equal number of spectators. A nice change. Eleven young riders really wanted to know: Who is the fastest of us?
On we went. It was as beautiful and as exciting as in the movie. Suddenly the horse of Luis (17) * shied. It veered off course, reared up and threw Luis with all its might onto the hard ground. Immediately broke his right tibia and fibula. But that’s not all. Quite disoriented, the bay mare jumped into the crowd. Result: A four-and-a-half-year-old child suffered a severe skull fracture. It was immediately intubated at Mission Hospital and transferred to a neurosurgical unit.
For our trauma surgeon Dr. Fritz Meiswinkel, the incident on the race track meant an extra shift on Saturday. The result looks good. Luis can truly be thankful that he received care so quickly in an expert manner. (* name changed)
