Sam Welch wins the double

Australian in top form

Until the middle of last year Sam Welch (16) lived in Sydney, Australia, just a couple of metres above sea-level.  He seems to have adjusted well to the Andean altitudes.  In this year’s Curahuasi’s cycle race he came first in his age-group.  Cycling ten laps through the town would have exhausted a good number of people.  But not Sam.  Immediately after his victory he went back to the start; this time to take part in the adult-race.  25 laps later he sped to his second gold medal of the day.  Sam Welch hopes to compete in the Tour de France some day.

Teams from Cusco and Abancay took part in Sunday’s sporting activities.  One cyclist collided with a street dog, which ended his finishing chances with a bump.

Sam’s Dad, Chris, is playing a key role in setting up our FM-transmitting network.  For missionary kids their parents’ decision to spend several years working in a foreign country brings substantial changes.  Sporting events are a good way to get integrated into the new society.  If Sam continues training in Curahuasi for the next few years, he will have no difficulty winning gold in Paris.
