Roughly a quarter of a billion people have heard or sung this song

What does it tell us?

Sometimes we Christians feel as though we are suffering from an infectious disease.  If you publicly take a stand for Christianity at a party you need to prepare yourself for mocking replies.  Did not the New Atheists prophesy that the scientific approach is the way of the future?  The biblical world view is something that is quickly going out of fashion.  The roughly 4% of active church goers in Germany seem to confirm this trend.

The song “What a beautiful name” speaks about the beauty and the power of Jesus Christ’s name.  If you think that this hymn belongs to the Salvation Army’s old repertoire, you cannot be more wrong.  On YouTube this hit has been clicked on over 250 million times.

So the Russian philosopher Nikolai Alexandrowitsch Berdjajew was right.  One cannot cure humankind from religiosity.  After a long spiritual search the former Marxist finally returned to Christianity.  Because of his religious conviction he was banished from Lenin’s state in 1922.

Money, sex and power can arouse and seduce us, but they do not fill the void in our souls.  Holiday delights, Bayern Munich and delightful delicacies can distract us, but no more.  The probing questions remain: where do I come from and where am I going?  Do real comfort and true love really exist?  What do I do with my sin that I lug around with me?  Is Jesus’ promise of eternal life just another unreliable straw to clutch hold of or does it have a real future perspective.

The song “What a beautiful name” does not prove the correctness of our Christian Faith.  But it gives a deep insight.  Deep in their hearts, every human feels the desire for God and a meaning of life.

Over the past years more than 160 long-term missionaries – motivated by their faith in Jesus Christ – have worked at Diospi Suyana.  Many of them speak freely about what God has done in their lives.  We discover the traces of God in the story of our missionary organisation.  That is why we sing “What a beautiful name” mornings in the hospital’s chapel!

Seen during Diospi Suyana’s morning service. Members of staff sing the song “What a beautiful name“ in Spanish.

You were the Word at the beginning
One With God the Lord Most High
Your hidden glory in creation
Now revealed in You our Christ

What a beautiful Name it is
What a beautiful Name it is
The Name of Jesus Christ my King

What a beautiful Name it is
Nothing compares to this
What a beautiful Name it is
The Name of Jesus

You didn’t want heaven without us
So Jesus, You brought heaven down
My sin was great, Your love was greater
What could separate us now

What a wonderful Name it is
What a wonderful Name it is
The Name of Jesus Christ my King

What a wonderful Name it is
Nothing compares to this
What a wonderful Name it is
The Name of Jesus
What a wonderful Name it is
The Name of Jesus
