Quechua Wedding

Three young couples were married today. There must have been 150 Indians sitting squeezed up together on the hard church benches. Another 150 waited patiently outside. The Johns and the Klemenzes had a seat in the second row. (previous photo). After the three hour ceremony, the celebrations continued in an inner courtyard. Each guest was given a plate of rice, noodles and meat.

In the front the wedding cake can be seen, baked for the celebrations by Barbara Klemenz and Dr. Martina John. Photo 3 shows the food being served in the kitchen. The room is full of smoke, the pots are on the ground. No luxury, no big expensive gifts, no 5 course gourmet meal – but this is where we belong.
