Peruvian President resigns

A crisis of confidence in Peru

Yesterday afternoon the Peruvian Head of State, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, handed in his resignation, thereby pre-empting a sure impeachment trial that was planned for today, Thursday.  He spent a mere 20 months in office.  A corruption scandal in connection with Odebrecht, which has shaken the whole of Latin America for the past two years, caused the 79 year old experienced economist to stumble.  The Brazilian building giant has handed out USD800mio in bribes to politicians across the political spectrum.

When on Tuesday videos were released showing friends of the president trying to bribe parliamentarians, incident followed rapidly on incident.

Throughout the country the police are on maximum alert.  Word is making the rounds that Deputy President, Martin Vizcarra, will take PPK’s place.  However, he does not enjoy a majority in Congress.  Most of the population is demanding new elections through which they want to exchange the political establishment across the board.
